LAHORE: The Lahore High Court has suspended the process initiated for the appointment of vice chancellors at the public sector universities by the Punjab caretaker government.
Justice Shahid Karim passed the order on a public interest petition questioning the mandate and power of the caretaker government to make appointment of regular VCs at the public varsities.
Raja Ali Raza filed the petition through Advocate Shazib Masud, challenging an advertisement published in newspapers on behalf of the caretaker government, inviting applications from candidates for the permanent VCs vacancies in various varsities.
The counsel argued that the impugned appointments were beyond the scope and jurisdiction of the caretaker government that had been installed for the sole purpose of conducting a fair and free election in the province.
He asked the court to declare the VCs appointment process at the public sector varsities, including the University of Gujrat, as illegal.
The written order of the hearing issued by the judge said, “It is directed that till the next date of hearing, the [VCs] appointment process shall remain suspended.”
The judge issued notices to the respondents for submission of their replies by June 27.
