Last Monday evening, Egyptian police arrested Egyptian model Salma Elshimy, who became known as “Saqqara Girl,” after she sparked angry reactions for taking pictures inside the archaeological area without getting a permit from authorities.
Cairo security forces also arrested the photographer while he was in Helwan.
Security services had spotted pictures circulating on social media of a girl wearing clothes bearing the Pharaonic stamp next to Saqqara pyramid, according to Egyptian website “Sada Al Balad.”
Dr. Mustafa Waziri, Secretary General of the Supreme Council of Antiquities, referred the incident to prosecution, and all necessary legal measures were taken.
Waziri affirmed that the Ministry of Tourism and Antiquities is always keen on preserving archaeological sites and history of the ancient Egyptian civilization, and if any person who is proven to be negligent of the status of the Egyptian antiquities to the country and civilization, will be punished.
The website reported that Salma Elshimy entered the location of the Saqqara pyramid as if she was a regular visitor, wearing a black abaya, then she took it off inside between the ruins sporting an obscene Pharaonic dress underneath.
Salma Elshimy wasn’t only arrested for disrespecting the archaeological site, but she also was ‘unliked’ on social media and heavily criticized for the selection of outfit and make up.
The size of Salam’s chest caught people’s attention, calling her ‘kilo of meat’ instead of ‘Cleopatra.’
Another follower wrote: “Aren’t the photos disgusting or am I wrong?” while others said that she’s stuffing pillows in her clothes.
Among other comments were: “Pyramid’s fart” and “She’s about to breastfeed sphinx.”
